I don’t usually deal with explosions like this,” said Joe Cedillos, president of the Homeowners Association for Hancock Village, where the explosion took place.

Three Murrieta firefighters were among the 15 injured, said Murrieta Fire & Rescue Deputy Fire Chief David Lantzer in a press briefing Monday evening. The blast occurred at a home in the Riverside County city shortly after noon. In March 2005, a nighttime blast at an arms depot in the northwestern provincial town of Battambang triggered an hourslong spray of shells and bullets, killing at least six people and causing panic. Cambodia, like many countries in the region, has been suffering from an extended heat wave, and the province where the blast took place registered a high of 39 C (102 F) on Saturday.

Estimates for the remaining 22 residences are still being compiled, according to officials. City officials still aren’t releasing details about the status of the four people injured by the blast. The blast on Jackie Lane in Santa Maria totally destroyed one home.

A nearby resident collects fragments falling from the roof of his house after an ammunition explosion at Prey Beng village in Kampong Speu province, Cambodia, Sunday, April 28, 2024. Santa Maria city officials say four people were taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries. One was a female who was extricated from the home that exploded.

Santa Barbara County Fire also provided a search dog to help clear the incident and allowed Santa Maria officials to move forward in their investigation process. Santa Maria city officials red-tagged eight homes as uninhabitable, meaning the structure was compromised or the gas was still turned off, Dandridge said. The Red Cross was called out to support the displaced families, and 15 other homes were green-tagged, meaning they sustained minimal damage but were deemed safe to enter. Damage estimates for the other 22 damaged homes are still being determined, he said.
